I guess that you have all seen the clip of Bush ducking from a thrown projectile. If not, here it is!
Yes, a pair of shoes were thrown at is-he-still-here-president Bush, by TV-reporter Muntader al-Zaidi, of the Cairo based station Al-Baghdadia.
As he threw his first shoe he screamed "This is a goodbye kiss from the Iraqi people, dog", followed by the second shoe and "This is for the widows and orphans and all those killed in Iraq". He was then lead out of the room and savagely beaten. In the next room. Where the people could still here him. One reporter, Mohammed Taher, from the Televisionstation Afaq, owned by the primeminister of Iraq, said “he was crying like a woman”. Muntader al-Zaidi, by the way, was last year kidnapped and released after three days.
The Shoe is a common gesture in arab/islamic culture. It symbolises that the target is lower than a shoe, which is filthy is is always on the ground. The statue of Saddam Hussein, for example, were thrown shoes at, when it was knocked down after the americans
Muntader al-Zaidi can recieve up to two years in jail, if he is convicted with insulting a visiting head of state, or up to 15 years in jail is he is convicted for attempted murder. Khalil al-Dulaimi, who represented Saddam Hussein is gathering a team to represent Muntader al-Zaidi. I might not have put my complete trust in this guy to defend me, but he does claim that 200 lawyers from around the world, including americans, have offered their services for free. And, you know, he did represent a massmurdering dictator...
Bush had two comments:
A: "That’s what people do in a free society, draw attention to themselves”. The NYtimes.com adds "as the man’s screaming could be heard outside".
B: "It was a size 10!"
